Alabama High School Graduation Exam (AHSGE) assesses a student's mastery of content in the core courses and gives its high school students to pass a graduation exam.

The primary purpose of the AHSGE is to assess a student's mastery of content in the core courses. Passing the AHSGE is required in order for a student to receive a high school diploma. The test looks at achievement in Reading, Language, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Students are given several opportunities to take each subtest.
The assessment is given 4 times each year to students in grades 9-12. Once a student passes a subtest they do not have to take it again. Those who do not pass on the first attempt take the subtest again at the next administration until they pass each section. High school students in Alabama learn according to the state's 4x4 curriculum - four years each of required courses of study in Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and English. The 24 credit minimum in course work required tograduate breaks down this way:

4 credits of English4 credits of Mathematics (including Algebra I and Geometry) 4 creditsof Science (including Biology and a Physical Science) 4 credits ofSocial Studies 1 credit of Physical Education .5 credit of HealthEducation .5 credit of Arts Education .5 credit of Computer Education(unless waived by the local board of Education, in which case this halfcredit becomes an elective credit) 5.5 credit of electives (the localboard of Education may require additional electives)

To evaluate a the readiness for graduation of a high school who has completed at least the minimum course requirements, Alabama administers the Alabama High School Graduation Exam (AHSGE). It's a multiple - choice exam written on the eleventh - grade level. It tests a student's grasp of his high school core course work and emphasizes logic and problem solving. It breaks down into 5 sections: Reading, Language, Math, Science and Social Studies.
