EXAM BREAKDOWN
There are two parts to the CAHSEE:
ENGLISH-LANGUAGE ARTS
The English-Language Arts portion addresses state academic content standards through grade 10. The exam consists of 72 multiple-choice questions (45 reading items and 27 writing items) and one essay (accounting for 18% of the section). The reading and decoding portion covers vocabulary, informational reading, and literary reading. The writing portion covers writing strategies, applications, and conventions. The exam has a written response to literature or an informational passage or another written response to writing prompt.

The Writing Strategies section of the CAHSEE consists of 2 multiple-choice questions. You will be given several short passages that are grammatically correct but that contain stylistic errors. You will be directed to individual paragraphs, sentences, or parts of sentences in these passages and asked to edit them. |

In short, in reading, this includes:
- Vocabulary
- decoding
- comprehension, and
- analysis of information and literary texts.
In writing, this covers:
- writing strategies
- applications, and
- the conventions of English (e.g. grammar, spelling, and punctuation).

| MATHEMATICS
The Mathematics portion addresses state academic content standards in grades 6-8 and Algebra 1. It includes statistics, data analysis and probability, number sense, measurement and geometry, mathematical reasoning, and algebra. Students also must demonstrate strong computational skills and a foundation in arithmetic, including working with decimals, fractions, and percents. The math exam consists of all multiple-choice questions.

Students are also asked to demonstrate a strong foundation in computation and arithmetic, including working with:
