EXAM BREAKDOWN

The CHSPE consists of two test sections: English-language Arts and Mathematics.

English-language Arts Section
The English-language Arts section has 84 multiple-choice questions and one writing task. The multiple-choice questions assess reading comprehension and language skills.

 

Writing Task
The writing taskrequires an expository essay. Theessence of expository writing is theclear statement of a controlling idea, orthesis, supported byappropriate reasons explained in some detail. See thesample writingtasks and essay scoring scale.

Reading Comprehension
This part of theEnglish-language Arts sectionconsists of reading selections accompaniedby multiple-choice questions abouteach selection. The 54 readingcomprehension questions test initialunderstanding, interpretation,critical analysis, and strategies using threetypes of text: literary(material typically read for enjoyment), informational (materialtypically found in textbooks and other sources of information),andfunctional (material typically encountered in everyday-lifesituations). The specificreading comprehension skills assessed arelisted below.


Language

The 30 Languagemultiple-choice questions combine mechanics and expression, includingsome study skills items, and measure achievement in applying theprinciples that form effective writing.

Mathematics Section
The Mathematics section has 50 multiple choice questions that assess content in the following areas: number sense and operations; patterns, relationships, and algebra; data, statistics, and probability; and geometry and measurement. The questions also assess the mathematical processes of communication and representation, estimation, mathematical connections, and reasoning and problem solving. The skills and processes assessed are listed below:
