Exam-Taking Tips
- Make a notation of the most doubtful answers. If there is time at the end of the exam, go back and recheck these answers. Remember, the first response is usually the best.
- Many times, one or two choices can be easily eliminated. This may result in a guess, but at least the chances are better between two choices than among four. Some questions may appear too simple. Although a few very easy and obvious questions are included, it’s more likely that a simple question should serve as a red flag. It might be best to reevaluate these questions for exceptions to a rule or special circumstances that would make the obvious, easy response incorrect.
- Watch out for absolute words in a question, such as “always,” “never,” or “completely.” These often indicate some little exception that can turn what reads like a true statement into a false statement, or vice versa.
- Be on the alert for words like “seldom,” “usually,” “best,” or “most reasonable.” These indicate that some judgment will be involved in answering the question, so look for two or more options that may be very similar.
- Occasionally, there may be a defective question. This does not happen very often, but if it does, make the best choice possible under the circumstances. Flawed questions are usually discovered. Either they are not counted in the exam or any one of the correct answers is credited instead.
- Try to relax as much as possible during study periods and during the exam itself. Worrying too much is counterproductive. Candidates who have worked diligently in school, have obtained a wide range of work experience, and have started exam review early will be in the best possible position to pass the exam.
