The Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT) is a mechanism used to demonstrate that students have learned certain necessary academic skills in high school. Students must take the GHSGT before they are able to receive their high school diplomas.

The GHSGT, administered to all students in the eleventh grade, determines whether or not a student will graduate from a Georgia (USA) high school. The test consists of five subject areas:

  1. English/Language Arts
  2. Mathematics
  3. Science
  4. Social Studies
  5. Writing
Students are expected to pass all five tests to graduate, but they are allowed to retake a test if they fail. The test is scored from 400 - 600, with 600 being a perfect score. Students must receive 500 points in order to pass (this applies to every exam). For most students passing the GHSGT is a steppingstone to college and better things. In other words it may increase your lifetime earnings significantly and allow you to get that better paying job.

Georgia's graduation tests provide valuable information for students, educators, and parents about student strengths and areas for improvement. The tests identify students who may need additional instruction in the content and skills required for a diploma. Since 2004, the English Language Arts and Math high school graduation tests have been used to measure Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) under the No Child Left Behind legislation.

All students seeking a Georgia high school diploma must pass the Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GHSGT) in four content areas as well as the Georgia High School Writing Assessment. These assessments ensure that students qualifying for a diploma have mastered essential core academic content and skills. Students with disabilities and English Language Learners may receive appropriate accommodations based on their needs and the specifications of their Individualized Education Program, their Individual Accommodation Plan, or their ELL Testing Participation Committee plan.
