Test Specifications

The Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL) is a two part exam that is designed to test candidates' ability to read and write with comprehension and clarity as well as measure their knowledge in the subject area in which they would like to teach.

Communications and Literacy

This test is broken down into two subtests: reading and writing. To meet the qualifying score on the Communications and Literacy test, you must meet the qualifying score of 70 on both parts. If you do not pass one of the subtests you can register to take the subtest at any given test administration.

Subject Matter Tests

These tests consist of multiple-choice items and open-response items. The subject matter tests measure proficiency of the subject area at the level required of an educator in the Massacusetts public schools.

General Curriculum Test and Foundations of Reading Test

Passing scores on these two tests are required of individuals seeking Initial Licensure as an Elementary teacher or a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities (PreK-8, 5-12). Individuals seeking Initial Licensure as a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities at the secondary level may either take the General Curriculum Test or a Subject Matter test in a specific discipline taught at that level.
